Delwar says as clarification to earlier statement

Desk Report

BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain clarified on Saturday night that Khaleda Zia's "lifetime leadership" of the party did not mean being appointed "chairperson for life".

The clarification came on the heels of an earlier statement—following a BNP standing committee meeting that decided Khaleda would "lead the party for life"—which gave rise to some misunderstanding.
He wished to clear up any misconception in this regard, he said, telling "Leading BNP for life is not the same as being lifelong chairperson."
Standing committee member Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui placed the proposal on Khaleda's lifetime leadership at the meeting, Delwar had earlier told reporters, and the party's top policy-making body passed it.
Tanvir said: "The proposal was made as Khaleda, even in the isolation of jail, was seen by her party and the people to be a leader who does not compromise."
