Staff Correspondent

Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, son of former BNP health minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, was arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday on charges of embezzling Tk 48 lakh public funds with his minister father.

He was taken to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court for Dhaka at 1pm where Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Golam Rabbani ordered recording of his bail appeal before sending him to jail.

Besides on an appeal from the investigation officer, Anticorruption Commission deputy assistant director Md Lutfor Rahman, the magistrate ordered that detained Mosharraf to be also shown arrested in the case.

Rahman filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on Monday that also accuses former line director of the Directorate of Health Dr Mahbubur Rahman.

Khandaker Mahbub owns Swajan Travels International at Segun Bagicha in the city.

The case alleged the accused abused power to give work order to Swajan Travels International for supplying return tickets to officials travelling abroad under a World Bank-funded project of the health directorate.

The work order was given in a 'shady way' through a managed tender without following the World Bank's "Government Purchase Rules 2003", inflicting a loss of Tk 48.51 lakh on the government, it added.
