Lt General Masud Uddin Chowdhury, who held key army posts, has been appointed new high commissioner to Australia, the foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.

Gen Masud by some accounts played a key role in declaring the statement of emergency on Jan 11, 2007.
 
He was made chief coordinator of the corruption-busting task forces after the declaration of the state of emergency.
 
The general was made chief of the National Defence College under the defence ministry on June 2 before he was transferred to the foreign ministry on June 8.
 
Gen Masud met foreign secretary Md Touhid Hossain on June 10 and joined the foreign ministry.
 
Masud was born on June 30, 1954 in Feni and commissioned in the Bangladesh Army on May 1, 1975.
