A speedy trial court sentenced two members of the militant Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and acquitted a third on Sunday, for the Aug 17 2005 serial bomb attacks in Chittagong.

Justice Shafiqul Karim of Chittagong division speedy trial tribunal sentenced JMB commander Javed Iqbal and Zulfiqar Ali and acquitted Arshadul Alam, in the first verdict of eight cases filed following the serial bomb attacks by JMB militants throughout Chittagong division.

State prosecutor, advocate Qamrul Islam Sajjad told bdnews24.com that the court sentenced the two under the Explosives Act and acquitted the third as the charges pressed against him could not be substantiated.

Twelve witnesses gave testimony in the trial. All the three accused in the case were present in the court for delivery of the verdict.

The two were found guilty of detonating a bomb in front of Hakkani petrol station at Halishahar, one of eight bomb explosions occurring simultaneously at eight different places in Chittagong on Aug 17 2005, which in turn was a part of the now-disbanded party's countrywide terror strikes that year.

Halishahar police filed a case naming six people, including the three who stood in the dock Sunday. The three other accused—Sheikh Abdur Rahman, Siddiqur Rahman, alias Bangla Bhai, and Ataur Rahman Sanni were found guilty and executed for a separate terror attack.
