The government has announced that shops and markets can remain open till 9pm in the first week of Ramadan.

The power situation would then be reviewed and the next decision on timings taken.

"The government is eager to let shops and markets stay open during Ramadan in the interest of businessmen," Anwarul Iqbal told reporters Wednesday after a meeting with the business community at the Secretariat.
"But the businessmen should be economical in using power keeping the crisis in mind," he said.
"We are allowing shops and markets to remain open till 9 pm on an experimental basis for the first week." Iqbal said adding: "But if any illumination is noticed anywhere, connection might be cut off and the person/s responsible might be arrested as well."
The next decision will be taken on Sept 5 after reviewing the power situation, he said.
The adviser also stressed the interest of workers in line with the labour law in this regard.
The businessmen alleged that the real businessmen had to face losses as a group of people arranged month-long fairs during Ramadan.
Some 20-50 fairs are held this month every year. They urged the adviser not to allow such fairs this year.
Iqbal said that the matter was the concern of the home ministry. "We will ask them to look into it, he added.
