Coalmine Graft Case

The High Court Monday granted former ministers M Shamsul Islam and MK Anwar anticipatory bail in the Baropukuria coalmine graft case.

The court also asked the government to show cause as to why the case should not be declared illegal.
 
An HC bench of Justice Sharifuddin Chakladar and Justice Md Emdadul Haq gave the order Monday noon.
 
The HC bench ordered the concerned agencies not to arrest the two BNP veterans before submission of charge-sheet in the case.
 
Shamsul Alam, assistant director, AntiCorruption Commission filed the case with Shahbagh police station on February 26 against 16 persons including former prime minister Khaleda Zia and 10 ministers on charges of resorting to irregularities and corruption in contracting out Barapukuria coalfield development work.
 
Other accused in the case include former alliance government ministers M Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, MK Anwar, Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, M Shamsul Islam, AKM Mosharraf Hossain and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury.
 
The case details said, the government had to suffer a loss of Tk 151.71 crore due to the illegal help provided during the contract award.
