Sent to jail later

Staff Correspondent

A Dhaka court sent former BNP lawmaker Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie to jail on Tuesday after he surrendered in a bribery case in line with a High Court order.

The former MP from Luxmipur-3 constituency is charged with extorting Tk 25 lakh from a contracting firm.

Annie appeared before the court of Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Md Azizul Haque in the morning, applying for bail through his lawyers.

The lawyers told the court that Annie had sought anticipatory bail from a High Court bench, which had directed him to surrender to the sessions judge's court and he had surrendered accordingly.

The judge, however, ordered Annie to jail saying the court did not have the jurisdiction to grant bail in a case included under Emergency Powers Rules, but asked authorities to give him division status in jail.

The public prosecutor informed the court that case was filed with Shahbag police on Sept 10 last year, in which Shamsul Haque—senior manager of contracting firm Abdul Monem Ltd—accused Annie of demanding Tk 50 lakh as a toll and accepting Tk 25 lakh of the amount through a pay order on May 7, 2005.
