Agency Falling indices on the country's bourses marked the opening day of the week. Heavy sell-offs by investors led around 85 percent of traded issues to close downbeat on Sunday. Market participators said the trend indicated low investor confidence in the market.
The benchmark DGEN or general index maintained a downward curve through the day to fall 57.93 points or 2.12 percent at 2674.07.
The DSI or all-share price index shed 49.95 points or 2.12 percent to 2295.64. The blue-chip DSE-20 closed at 2471.06, down 19.57 points or 0.78 percent.
All indices on the Chittagong Stock Exchange closed downbeat, influenced by huge losses in banks, non-bank financial institutions and leather companies.
The CSCX or selective categories index slumped 109.57 points or 2.00 percent to close on 5352.20.
The CASPI or all-share price index closed at 8230.75, falling 175.51 points or 2.08 percent. The bourse's blue-chip CSE-30 lost 75.17 points, or 0.99 percent, to end on 7512.20.
Sell-offs dominated the day's trading with just a handful of issues gaining, an official with brokerage house Lanka Bangla Securities told bdnews24.com.
"It seems investors are reaping profits at the first chance," investment consultant Bashir Ahmed said.
Profit-taking usually occurs after couple of days of gains, but the last few days witnessed only trivial rises, he added.
A top official of a brokerage firm told bdnews24.com the lower trade volume and turnover indicated that participation is going down.
"Today's massive sell-off shows investor confidence is at its lowest ," the official claimed.
Turnover leader Titas Gas fell 6.54 percent to Tk 357.
Second on the board, Square Pharmaceuticals finished at Tk 3954, down by 1.69 percent.
Market major Beximco Pharmaceuticals slipped 0.92 percent to Tk 107.10.
ACI ended on Tk 459.10, tumbling 4.69 percent.
Beximco slumped 7.98 percent to finish at Tk 107.10.
Among the other scrips on the turnover board, Islami Bank, Lanka Bangla Finance, Keya Cosmetics and British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company slipped on profit-taking; Square Textiles advanced.
Turnover on the DSE reached Tk 2.61 billion, with 16,425,741 shares changing hands; losers outnumbered gainers advancers 190 to 26, with nine issues holding steady.
Turnover from 3,297,319 traded shares on the port city bourse amounted to Tk 376.22 million; of the 126 traded issues, 112 lost, 12 gained and two remained unchanged.
