Extortion Cases

Desk Report

The High Court granted four-month bail on Wednesday to controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in four separate extortion cases.

The HC bench of justices Sharifuddin Chaklader and Md Imdadul Haque Azad also put freezes on proceedings of the four cases for four months.

The court also ordered the government to explain within four weeks why the cases against Mamun would not be cancelled.

Of the four cases, three were filed with Gulshan Police Station on March 27 and May 4 and 9 last year and the other with Dhanmondi Police Station on April 19.

Barrister Fakrul Islam stood for Mamun in the court and deputy attorney general Zahirul Haque Zahir defended the government side.

Fakrul told bdnews24.com that with Wednesday's ruling, Mamun had been granted bail in a total of five separate cases, while six more cases were still pending against the businessman.
