AP, NEW YORK -- Starbucks says it is cutting almost 1,000 non-store jobs by July 29 as part of its bid to re-energize the brand and boost its profit by cutting costs.

In a letter to all employees Tuesday, Chief Executive Howard Schultz said the gourmet coffee chain is reducing the number of positions and partners across the country.

The letter comes after the company has said it will close 600 underperforming locations. The first 50 locations are being shut down this month.

The positions being cut are in addition to the layoffs from the store closures.

''Unfortunately, some of the decisions will result in not only store closures, which we announced earlier this month, but a restructuring of our organization that will eliminate some positions,'' Schultz said in the letter.
