JAKARTA, Tue Jul 29, (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Sixteen fishermen have died in Indonesia's Papua province since the weekend and 93 have been hospitalised after drinking a traditional liquor, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

Some of the victims were believed to be Thai and survivors were being treated at a hospital in Merauke district, 675 km from Papua's capital Jayapura, the deputy national police spokesman said.

"They drank the alcohol while sailing and fishing," Sulistyo Ishak said, adding that police could not yet confirm the number of Thai victims.

In August last year, 13 people were killed in Papua after drinking a concoction containing 70 percent alcohol combined with an energy drink and condensed milk.
