AP, BERLIN  -- The dollar fell against the 15-nation euro Monday despite a report showing consumer confidence falling to a more-than five-year low in Germany, Europe's largest economy.

The euro bought $1.5709 in early European trading, up from $1.5678 late in Europe on Friday. The British pound was static at $1.9876 compared to $1.9875 on Friday, while the dollar fell to purchase 107.72 Japanese yen from 107.83 yen at the end of last week.

The closely watched GfK consumer climate index on Monday showed confidence slipping in Germany to a more-than five-year low as higher energy prices, growing fears of a recession and concern about the global economy unnerved German shoppers.

The forward-looking index dropped to 2.1 points for August from a revised 3.6 points in July and its lowest level since June 2003.
