Attorney Service Ordinance challenged

Two Supreme Court lawyers filed a writ petition with the High Court on Wednesday challenging the legality of the Attorney Service Ordinance, promulgated by the president.

Belal Hossain Joy and KM Zabir filed the appeal with the bench of justices Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Mashuk Hossain Ahmed.
 
After filing the petition, Zabir told reporters that the court would hear the petition next week.
 
The president, according to the constitution, cannot promulgate any ordinance if it is not extremely necessary or related to elections, during the rule of caretaker government, said the writ petition.
 
The petition questioned a provision in the ordinance that only those with LLB honours and LLM degrees from a university or Bar-at-Law degrees are eligible for attorney services.
 
Those who have been practising law with LLB degrees are not eligible for attorney services, which is discriminatory, the petition said.
 
The president promulgated the Attorney Service Ordinance on May 18.
