Though fruits are the best natural food for all, they can become dangerous as well. Fruits can cause serious health hazards like stomach pain, acidity, digestive trouble, poisoning, and even colon cancer when contaminated. Greedy traders contaminate them with carbide, a toxic chemical. In Bangladesh, unscrupulous traders sell carbide-mixed fruits to reap their personal gains. They mix carbide with fruits to protect them from quick perishing. True is that traders need long time to bring fruits from growers to buyers. In the mean time many of them perish and cause big loss to them. So they mix them with carbide and thus leave thousands of people at serious health risk. Unaware of the danger, people buy and consume these toxic and artificially ripen fruits and develop serious diseases. According to a news item, experts told a news agency that carbide mix hinders biochemical reaction in fruits and subsequently cause the deadly diseases. They very wisely suggested for enacting a "carbide control law" which would help check carbide hoarding, selling and wholesaling in the country. Contaminating fruits with toxic chemicals is a serious crime. It is no less serious than murder. So actions should be taken against the dishonest businessmen immediately. Also important is to teach the buyers an easy way to identify carbide-contaminated fruits. They can do it through a small examination on the spot. Contaminated fruits, especially mangoes, can be identified once they found fully yellowed but firm inside and lack original flavour. The buyers must also be informed of the dangers of consuming contaminated fruits. The government should act immediately to save thousands of people from the peril. A carbide control law and a publicity campaign are urgently necessary. |
