A Dhaka court Sunday denied bail to former Awami League minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, in an extortion case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury.

Selim's bail plea was submitted to the Special Judge's Court-5 on July 2.
 
Judge Md Ashraf Hossain also exempted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, co-accused in the case, from personal appearance in hearings of the case and set July 27 for the next hearing
 
Hasina requested an exemption from personal appearance in the court on June 19.

Businessman Azam J Chowdhury filed the case on June 13 last year with Gulshan Police Station against Hasina and her cousin Sheikh Selim, accusing them of extorting Tk 3 crore. Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana was also later charged in the case.
 
The case accuses the three of being involved in the extortion of Tk 3 crore in exchange for awarding a work permit for the Shiddirganj power plant project in 2001 during AL's tenure.
 
Hasina was arrested on July 16 last year. She was shown arrested in the case after it was brought under emergency powers rules.
