Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej says he will move ahead with plans to amend Thailand's constitution to prevent the Supreme Court from disbanding his party.

The courts currently have power to dissolve an entire political party if a top executive member engages in corruption.

The renewed call comes after the deputy leader of Mr Samak's party was found guilty of vote buying last week.

Mr Samak says that the dissolution of any party would threaten Thailand's stability, but the proposal sparked street protests when it was first announced several weeks ago.

"As Buddha says we must tackle sufferings at their causes, we have to amend this constitution that is causing this crisis," said the Prime Minister who is a Buddhist.

Mr Samak, in an unusually long broadcast, said that Thailand's current political crisis was caused by the opponents of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who failed to finish him off politically in a 2006 coup and were trying to oust the government and disband the Thaksin-backed party.

The prime minister, a veteran political knife-fighter, campaigned on an avowedly pro-Thaksin ticket that won huge support in the countryside.
