Desk Report

An alleged leader of a banned militant outfit died in an exchange of gunfire with police at Taherhuda village in Harinakundu, Jhenaidah, in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

Jhenaidah police super Jahangir Hossain Matubbor said police had arrested Afzel, regional commander of extremist political group Janajuddha, in Harinakundu on Tuesday.

Afzel informed the police of the whereabouts of a stash of illegal arms, said the police official. Based on his information police went to seize them at around 1am taking Afzel with them, Jahangir said.

Afzel retrieved a revolver from a betel leaf plantation at Taherhuda village, the police super claimed. The militant leader shouted out to his associates hiding there, who fired at the police, Jahangir said.

The exchange of fire went for 20 minutes, he added.

The police super said they found Afzel after he had been shot and rushed him to Horinakundu Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

They also recovered a revolver, eight rounds of ammunition and an LG cartridge, as the other suspected militants escaped the scene, Jahangir said.

There were eight pending cases, including six murder cases, against Afzel, he added.

Afzel is the son of Monser Ali of Taherhuda village in Horinakundu upazila.
