Huge casualty occurs causing loss of lives every year in Chittagong Ship Breaking Yard.

There is no Safety measure for the labors. An alarming statistics shows such casualties left around 600 workers killed and another three thousand injured or disabled in the last 15 years.

The casualties mainly result from oil or gas chamber blasts, flammable substances, fall from high places, manual carrying of heavy steel sheets etc. The labors reside in a most unhygienic condition, sleeping on the floors in-group and taking poor foods.
Oil-spills from around 70 ship breaking yards endanger aquatic lives while yard enclosures make 16km beach at Sitakunda in Chittagong out of reach for the fishermen.

Bangladesh is dependent on ship-breaking for its domestic steel requirements. Scrap Ships provide about 80% of the country’s steel needs.

Besides this around three million people are directly or indirectly employed in the industry, among them 40 percent of the work force comprise of child labor. Chittagong ship breaking yard is a highly polluted coastal belt of 20km.

The working conditions are very dangerous. Health and safety regulations for the workers are very poor.
The labors of ship Breaking Yard want the absolute protected environment in their job. They are not interested to work in this appalling situation.

That’s why they are forthright about their claim. They have demanded life insurance and casualties insurance for the every individual

Who are connected with this job.

In this regards Saiful Islam labor of Ship breaking yard Said, “I don’t have another way to get a different job. Otherwise I will leave the job. My family always feels insecure about my job”.

The industry, considering above-mentioned grim aspects, can be termed as a gift for a few, bane and curse for many and a catastrophic threat for the environment and aquatic lives.

So immediate step should be taken by the Government to rescue the labors of Ship breaking yard. Otherwise it will getting worse for labors, according to the concern people.
