New British high commissioner to Bangladesh Stephen Evans arrived in Dhaka Monday.

Evans landed at Zia International Airport around 8.30pm, Mahfuza Begum, an immigration official, told

In his 28 years of diplomatic career, Evans has dealt mostly with South Asian affairs at the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Prior to being appointed to Bangladesh, he was the head of the South Asia Department at the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Evans had earlier served as the UK's top diplomat in Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007. He had also worked as British high commissioner to Sri Lanka.

"Our futures are inter-linked in so many ways. And there is a unique thread running through each aspect of our relationship – it is the people of our two countries, bound by deep personal and historical ties and our shared values," a Sunday statement issued by the British High Commission in Dhaka quoted Evans as saying.

"I look forward to extending this close friendship even further."

Evans is married to Sharon Ann Evans, with one son and two daughters.
