A speedy trial tribunal here Wednesday jailed two top leaders of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for life for court bombing that killed three people, including a bomber.

The convicts are JMB divisional commander Javed Iqbal alias Mohammad and the banned Islamist outfit’s explosive expert Zahidul Islam Suman alias Boma Mizan.

Javed Iqbal, who had been sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in three cases earlier, was in the dock while Boma Mizan was tried in absentia as he is on the run.

According to the prosecution, police-constable Rajib Barua and local footballer Shahabuddin were killed in a bomb attack by JMB bombers on the Chittagong court-building premises on November 29, 2005, in the wake of serial bombings across the country.

JMB cadre Hossain Ali was seriously injured in one explosion while he was hurling bombs at the court building. He died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital after two days.

After investigation, police submitted charge sheet against JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Shura member Ataur Rahman Sunny, Javed Iqbal and Boma Mizan.

But the court exonerated Shaikh Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai and Ataur Rahman Sunny from the charge as they had already been hanged on March 29, 2007 for the killing of two Jhalakathi judges in a deadly bomb attack by JMB activists.

“After examining records and witnesses, Chittagong Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Shafiqul Karim pronounced the judgment in a jam-packed court yesterday says a spot report.
