Mirpur garment workers take to streets, clash with police |

Workers of at least two garment factories in Mirpur were involved in clashes with police Tuesday, a police official said, reports bdnews24.com Police arrested 12 workers from the scene, Mirpur police chief Mohiuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com.
The angry workers, protesting closure of a factory and demanding pay raises, vandalised a number of vehicles.
Babul Ali, a worker of SQ Garments, told bdnews24.com the workers at his factory had been demanding pay hikes and allowances for several days, as the owners laid off some 1,200 workers with varying explanations.
Babul said the workers coming to the factory Tuesday morning saw that the factory had been closed for an indefinite period, which made them take to the streets.
At least 25 garment workers were injured as police charged with batons, said the factory worker. The injured were admitted to different hospitals, he added.
