Possession of explosives

Bdnews24.com

A Magura court sentenced four Harkat-ul Jihad activists to 20 years rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday, under the explosives act.

Judge Md Nazir Ahmed, of Magura Special Judge's Court-2, also fined them Tk 20,000 each or another year behind bars in case of failure to pay the fine.

The convicted are Maolana Mokaddas Ali—a close associate of Huji leader Mufti Hannan—Baki Billah, Khalilur Rahman and Rafiqul Islam Sabuj. Of them, Khalil and Sabuj stand accused in a case involving the Aug 21, 2004, grenade attack on an Awami League rally.

State counsel Sanjit Kumar Biswas told reporters after Tuesday's verdict that Mufti Hannan in a confessional statement had informed authorities that Mokaddas Ali was in possession of a huge cache of arms.

Based on his statement the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Mokaddas and Baki on Oct 29 last year.

RAB sub-inspector Imran Gazi filed a case against all four on Oct 31, after the elite force recovered a cache of bombs and equipment for manufacturing bombs from Mohammadpur in Magura following information gleaned from interrogation of Makaddas and baki.

On June 10, another special court in Magura sentenced the four to 20 years rigorous imprisonment under the arms act.

Mokaddas, Baki and Sabuj are behind bars, while Khalil is currently on the run.

A Satkhira court sentenced another Huji leader Abu Jandal, and an accomplice Nazrul Ghorami, to 20 years rigorous imprisonment on Sunday for possession of grenades, in a separate case under the explosives.
