Finance adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam Monday proposed to allocate Tk 2,000 crore in the next fiscal year to ensure employment of the rural unemployed people. The money will be spent on a new programme, "100 Days Employment Generation" that would create jobs for 20 lakh unemployed poor for at least 100 days. The programme that will create an employment of 20 crore man-days with daily remuneration of Tk 100 per person will be designed as an employment guarantee scheme for the unemployed," the adviser said. He also proposed Tk 1,578 crore for the Food for Work Programme that was expected to generate another 14.4 crore man-days of employment. The government took measures to enhance purchasing power of ultra-poor and the rural middle and lower middle class communities," the adviser said. Mirza Aziz said the government planned to widen and deepen our social safety-net programmes by increasing the total number of beneficiaries and increasing the rates of subventions involving Tk 16,932 crore (2.8 percent of GDP) in the next fiscal year which is 48 percent higher than the revised allocation of Tk 11,467 crore. |
