Bdnews24.com A Dhaka court Sunday sentenced former prime minister Khaleda Zia's assignment officer Firoz Mahmud Iqbal to five years in jail on charges of misappropriating government funds.
Judge Md Ashraf Hossain of the Special Court-5, set up in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhban also fined the convict Tk 36 lakh. He will have to serve one more year behind bars in failure to pay the fines.
Firoz is on the run. The sentence will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender.
Anticorruption Commission deputy director Syed Iqbal Hossain filed the case against Firoz on November 13 last year, accusing him of using five government vehicles by abusing power.
The misappropriation of fuel charges and other expenditures by Firoz cost the state coffers Tk 36 lakh in losses, according to case details.
Earlier, the court had sentenced him to 13 years in jail for amassing illegal wealth and concealing wealth information. His wife had also been sentenced.
