Angry garment workers blocked traffic in Savar to protest the rumoured death of a colleague in a road accident Tuesday. Corrected

They vandalised vehicles and put up barricades on Abdullahpur-EPZ motorway, police said.

A speeding sand-laden truck hit and seriously injured Rupali, a garment worker, at Narshinghapur of Ashulia around 8:30am, police said.

The garment workers believed that Rupali had died on the scene. When the rumour of her death spread, the agitated workers took to the streets.

Rupali is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Her condition was stated to be critical, doctors said.

Workers of the local factories torched the sand truck and vandalised some more vehicles, Ashulia police sub-inspector Mazharul Islam told bdnews24.com.

Rupali is an operator at a garment factory owned by Sharmin Group. Her sister and another worker also suffered injuries in the accident and were sent to hospital.
