The government has appointed Mohamed Mijarul Quayes as Bangladesh ambassador to Russia, the foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday.

Quayes is currently serving as the high commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives.

The post of Bangladesh's top diplomat in Russia was vacant after immediate-past envoy M Amir Hossain Sikder retired last year.

Quayes is one of the senior career diplomats of Bangladesh.
