Bdnews24.com Columbia University in the US has awarded BRAC founder and chairperson Fazle Hasan Abed an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, the world's largest nongovernmental organisation said in a statement Friday.
Abed was awarded for his "comprehensive approach to fighting poverty, the powerful model of social change he introduced and his commitment to serving the poorest", the statement said.
Lee C Bollinger, the president of Columbia University, conferred the degree at its 254th commencement ceremony Wednesday.
Columbia University was founded in 1754, the fifth oldest institution of higher education in the US.
Abed founded BRAC in 1971 to help rehabilitate refugees returning from India to newly independent Bangladesh.
Abed was previously awarded degrees of Doctor of Laws by Queen's University in Canada, Doctor in Education by the University of Manchester in the UK and Doctor of Humane Letters by Yale University in the US.
