REUTERS, MUMBAI - Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the country's top car maker, has raised prices of most models by up to $353, a dealer said on Monday, to offset some of the impact of the high cost of raw materials such as steel.

The increases range from 1,000 rupees ($24) on the Zen Estilo and Wagon R hatchbacks to 15,000 rupees on the diesel variant of Swift, said the dealer who asked not to be named.

The price increases, which spared the Grand Vitara SUV, came into effect at the weekend, he said.

Maruti has withdrawn a special introductory price on the newly launched Swift DZire model, he said.

A spokesman for Maruti, a unit of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, declined comment.

Maruti's managing director, Shinzo Nakanishi, had said in April the company was negotiating with steel companies on new contracts, for which it faced up to a 40 percent price increase.

Maruti had cut prices of some models in end-February after the government reduced excise duty on small cars to 12 percent from 16 percent.

Top utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra last week raised prices by up to 2.5 percent, also citing input costs.
