The central executive committee of Jamaat-e-Islami Monday condemned the arrest of party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami in the GATCO case, a party statement said. Members of the committee at a meeting termed the GATCO case false and said it was aimed at harassing politicians.
Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer AKM Nazir Ahmad presided over the meeting.
According to the Jamaat statement, Nizami served two ministries for five years with honesty and efficiency.
"Nobody can show any evidence of any corruption of even one taka against him. His only fault was that he was on the purchase committee," the statement said.
The statement said Nizami was shown arrested in the 'false case' for harassment and to taint his image.
The arrest of top political leaders had messed up the atmosphere for election and dialogue, the Jamaat statement said.
