Sequel to attack on students Bdnews24.com A street battle between the police and Khulna University students left at least 20 people injured on the outskirts of the city Friday. The clashes erupted shortly after 1pm when police used batons to disperse the students putting a barricade on a road in protest against Thursday night's attacks on students by transport workers.
The students ransacked up to 25 buses, several roadside shops and Gallamari police box in the battle.
The KU authorities asked the students to vacate dormitories by 5pm Friday.
YM Belalur Rahman, superintendent of police for Khulna, said police had clubbed protesters after they did not listen to police requests to take the barricade off the bustling road.
"We requested the students to free the road. But they did not listen to us," Rahman told bdnews24.com.
Angry students rained down brickbats and stones on the police
The university's summer vacation began Thursday.
SM Atiar Rahman, public relations officer of Khulna University, claimed that up to 80 students had suffered injuries in the battle.
Fourteen students were admitted to hospitals. Among the injured, Atik, Shishir, Muktadir, Munir, Shakil, Asad, Maruf and Mizan were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Khulna police said that up to 12 police personnel had been injured and one of them was in critical condition. He was admitted to Khulna District Police Hospital.
The students put a barricade on Khulna-Satkhira highway at 9am in protest against transport workers' attacks on students. They also demanded punishment to the attackers.
Atiar Rahman said four students boarding a Hanif Paribahan bus Thursday night got involved in an altercation with its staff at Sonadanga bus stand after the workers refused to take their computers in.
At some point, the bus staff snatched tickets from the students and drove them out of the bus, which promoted the students to call their friends by phone.
Some other students rushed to the scene and vandalised the bus counter triggering clashes between students and workers Thursday midnight.
