The number of casualties reached 42 and some 20 passengers remained missing, a day after a launch capsized in the river Ghorautra in Nikli Upazila under Kishoreganj district, police said Tuesday.

Four dead bodies recovered Monday were identified as Renu Mia, 45, Dhiresh Chandra Das, 30, Sakhina, 55 and two and a half year old Chandra Das.

Assistant superintendent of police Asaduzzman from the scene said Monday that a passenger launch MV Chanpur bound for Mithamain Upazila was caught in a storm at about 4.30 pm and sank in the Ghorautra river in Ghoradia area.

The rescue operation began in full swing Monday after BIWTA rescue team from Dhaka reached there.

Relatives and friends of the hapless passengers thronged the spot, anxiously waiting for news about the missing.

The position of the sunken launch has been ascertained.
