RMG sector is evolving into the largest employer of workers .But , workers’ wages, other benefits and welfare needs are not increasing consistently . In the latest incident , at least thirty people, including journalists who were on the spot ,were injured as nearly five thousand workers of three garments factories clashed with police engaged in maintaining order , at Kalurghat industrial area. The trouble started on Monday when at one of the factories the workers came to know that the management has reduced their wage rates . The workers again took to the streets on Tuesday morning when they were locked out from the factory. On this day , workers from two other factories also joined in and barricaded the road near Kalurghat bridge .When the police rushed to the scene , the ensuing conflict between the police and the workers resulted d in the injuries to the workers , the policemen, and the journalists and other bystanders. We feel that this latest incident may lead to recurring incidents of protests by workers , resulting in violence which will damage factories and cause injuries and even death to workers and also management officials . The concentration of garments factories at Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and other industrial conurbations in the country will thus become vulnerable. The fixation of minimum wages , adequate pay scales , other ancillary benefits have been undertaken by past governments . Yet , till now, the proposed upgradation of pay and benefits of the workers have not been implemented by the RMG entrepreneurs . Only a few weeks ago, the Chief Adviser called upon the textiles and RMG factory owners to look after the welfare of the workers and give them all monetary and social benefits, particularly at a time of rising prices. . We feel that the time has come for the government to address the problems of the workers in the RMG sector ,so that the factory owners implement revised pay scales and benefits packages as soon as possible. |
