Bangladesh is a country of valuable natural resources. These may be a source of foreign currency if used properly. At a discussion held recently on “Role of natural resources, beauty and tourism industry at Durgapur and Kalmakanda areas” panelists rightly urged the government to allocate special funds in the national budget to boost environment and people-friendly tourism business in those places. They were also right in urging the government to incorporate projects for the same purpose. We agree with the panelists that the areas are enriched with mineral, natural resources and beauty. Still, these places are discriminated and backward. Development activities can eradicate discrimination and poverty from the places. This will also ensure a balanced economic system in the country. The panelists observed that unless the government begins development work from the underprivileged and deprived areas ensuring right to hard-core poor people living there, no development actually takes place in true sense. They are absolutely right. The government should understand that the state is for the poor who cannot develop their own status. They must ensure infrastructure development like communication, power and water supply at Durgapur and Kamlakanda for boosting domestic tourism. Durgapur and Kamlakanda in Netrokona district are the place of tribal people who participated in our Liberation War in 1971. They are extremely deprived. The government must consider the suggestions put forward by the distinguished panelists. Infrastructure development like roads, power and water supply and building of hotels at Durgapur and Kamlakanda will help them to flourish as tourist spots and will surely boost the national economy. We must give the tribal people their due share of the country’s development budget. The caretaker government should take immediate steps for the development of Durgapur and Kalmakanda.
