Electronic and electrical appliances are being damaged in large numbers due to frequent power outage and rapid voltage fluctuation, reports UNB.

According to electronic and electrical appliance traders, the rate of complaints about the damage of the goods has increased abnormally with the rise in load shedding across the country.

They said most complaints are being received about the damage of lift, air conditioner, refrigerator, washing machine, micro-oven, lights and fan.

The country''s power supply situation marked a serious deterioration with the start of the summer. Electricity consumers have to experience load shedding for several hours at different spells on a day. In many areas, consumers have to live without electricity for more than 6 to 7 hours in day and night times.

Such abnormal load shedding not only causes sufferings for the consumers, but also damages their electrical and electronic appliances in large numbers that forces them to spend huge money on repair. Electronic and electrical appliance traders also admitted that the situation is really very bad.

The incidence of damage to electronic and electrical appliances have risen by 50 percent due to frequent, abrupt load shedding, said a senior staff of a lift and air-condition trading company. For the unexpected damages, the users of such appliances have to spend huge amount on repair.

An executive of Maan Bangladesh Limited, a leading lift supply company, said the complaints about the damages have increased substantially in recent days with the increase in power outage.

"We are receiving 50 percent more complaints these days from any other time." He said that when an elevator, with capacity of six persons, gets damaged, it costs between Tk 10,000 and Tk 100,000 for repair. The price of such a lift is between Tk 10 lakh and Tk 17 lakh depending on quality and brand. Some 15,000 lifts are in use in the country at present, he added.

A similar reaction came from Aziz and Company, another lift provider. Complaints have become common these days, said a company executive. Officials of Samsung Electronic said complaints about damage to air-conditioners and refrigerators are rising fast.

He said if a refrigerator is affected by power outage or voltage fluctuation, it costs Tk 1,200 or more for repair. An official of a multinational company said the recent power outages and voltage fluctuations badly damaged 10 air-conditioners and 60 light bulbs of the company. "We had to spend nearly Tk 50,000 on repair," he said.
