Govt urged to take steps to prevent cardiac diseases PDF Print E-mail

Speakers at a seminar Saturday urged the government to undertake a preventive cardiology programme and initiate a coordination with the National Centre for Control of Rheumatic Fever and Heart Diseases (NCCRF&HD) to help prevent from cardio diseases in the country, reports agency.

The preventive measure should be implemented by the NCCRF&HD under the control of director general of health services for coordinating the activity of collaborative hospital, regional centre, medical colleges, district hospital and upazila health complexes, they said.

They were speaking at a seminar on Preventive Cardiology Programme: Bangladesh perspective organized jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the NCCRF&HD in Hotel Sheraton.

Former adviser of the caretaker government Prof. Brig. General (retd) Abdul Malik addressed the seminar as the chief guest. Prof. Razia Sultana, Director of NCCRF&HD chaired the seminar.

Prof. Abul Faiz, Director General of Health Services, Prof KMHS Sirajul Islam spoke as special guests. Dr Md Mustafa Zaman was the guest of honor.

Prof Brig (retd) Abdul Malik said the number of patients suffering from heart diseases are gradually increasing in the country, which is a great threat to the national health.

The rate of heart diseases will increase to an alarming level unless measures are not undertaken on time, he said adding that the government has given priority to the health sector and as part of it proper steps have also been taken to prevent heart diseases.

As a national institution, the NCCRF&HD should play the pioneering role in preventing cardiac diseases and it is the demand of the time that the center would play its role as the national center for preventing cardiac diseases, he added.

Prof. Razia Sultana Mahmud, Director, NCCRF&HD and Dr. Kamrun Nahar Choudhury, Assistant Prof of NCCRF&HD presented a paper at the seminar.

In the paper they mentioned that most heart diseases are preventable and cost effective and for Bangladesh ‘s perspective we have to decide the necessary steps that need to be taken to prevent Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD).

Not only increase in government’s awareness programme, but contributions of scientists and health professionals should be also be marketed in line to let the people know whereabouts of the services related to cardio vascular diseases, the paper said.

The paper underscored the need for strengthening the cooperation of the Non-Government Organization (NGO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and continue their efforts to increases the capacity for heart health promotion in Bangladesh .

Public health awareness could be created among the people of all walks through publicity in the mass media including the electronic media and the print media, it added.

The paper emphasized the need for behavioural Change Communication (BCC) to provide information, education and communication services to the people for improving the health of individuals and the nation by providing risk factor of heart diseases and the services available and what individuals and communities can do to improve their health.

Besides, importance was given to initiating One stop service for providing both clinical and preventive services under one roof.

It also suggested providing training of health professionals like doctors, nurses, technologists and health assistants for preventive heart health management.

Laboratory service should be improved to ensure early detection facilities, the paper said adding that there should have a Screening programme for identification of unrecorded disease or risk factor of heart diseases by the application of tests, examinations such as BMI , Lipid profile, blood sugar, BP that can be applied rapidly.

Prof Md Jalaluddin, Prof Nazrul Islam spoke on the occasion. Dr Kamrun Nahar Choudhury coordinated the seminar.

A large number of policy makers in the health sector, eminent cardiologists and other health professionals attended the seminar.
