Home Adviser MA Matin said all the prisons should be treated as correction centers, not punishment centers as the prison guards are trying to modify the prisoners, reports UNB.

"The government and the prison authorities are taking various steps aiming at making all the prisons as correctional centers so that the prisoners can go back to healthy and normal life in the society," said the Adviser while inaugurating the Prison Week-2008.

Terming introduction of prison week as revolutionary, the Matin said the outlook and views of prisoners and general people have started changing about prison and prison authorities.

"I hope that the prison authority will uphold goodwill as their main motto is "to keep the custody save, show them the path of light (Rakhibo Nirapad, Dekhabo Alor Path)," Matin said.

Appreciating various correctional training programmes of the prison guards inside the jail, he said they are doing well despite limitations. The government has taken initiatives to increase prisons in the country as the number of prisoners is almost three times of the accommodation capacity.

According to Bangladesh Society for Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR), the number of prisoners stood at 82,254 in November 2006 as against the capacity of 27,146.

The Adviser informed that work on construction of 17 prisons in the districts is in progress. Work on Central Jail at Keraniganj across the river Buriganga is also progressing at a cost of Tk 317 crore.

On completion, the Dhaka Central Jail in the old city will be shifted to Keraniganj meeting the long cherished demand of the people.

Among others, naval chief Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam, Home secretary Abdul Karim, DG of BDR Major General Shakil Ahmed and DG of RAB Hasan Mahmud Khandker were present at the function.
