Climate change worldwide due to a number of reasons has threatened the very existence of human life in both the developing and developed countries. Again, diseases and adverse health conditions are on the increase in Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries. The Japanese International Cooperation Agency has now undertaken a renewed policy initiative whereby it will prioritise disaster management and protection from the effects of climate change threatening permanent inundation of a huge area along our coastal belt affecting human habitation and agriculture , fisheries and livestock. JICA has always been actively helping Bangladesh with financial and technical assistance in three sectors— economic development , social empowerment and good governance —in order to help Bangladesh attain rapid economic and social development . Now the prospect that only a metre of sea level rise might devour 15 to 17 percent of Bangladesh’s total land , has alerted JICA, and the organisation is putting more emphasis on climate change and mitigation of its adverse impacts. Resident Representative and other high officials of JICA on Sunday publicly announced to the media this new policy framework for the future programmes of JICA to tackle natural disasters in Bangladesh brought on by climate change  We look forward to the early implementation of the policy initiatives to be undertaken by JICA now. The progammes to be undertaken have to put in place with effective early warning systems , building of sufficient number of cyclone shelters in coastal areas to help protect people from disasters Also people have to be made aware about quick response to disasters and emerging threats from climate change, through advocacy programmes jointly undertakebn by our public agencies , the media and JICA personnel .
