The country’s poultry industry has recently suffered a serious setback following large scale decimation on account of avian influenza widely known as bird flu. In order to overcome this dismaying situation , and to boost commercial output of poultry , fishery and diary production , the Council of Advisers approved the Fish feed and Livestock Feed Ordinance 2008 , on Sunday . This law aims to ensure the sufficient production of standard quality and infection-free feed for poultry , fish and cattle so that the poultry and fish and dairy products in our diet will be disease -free , protein-enriched and also affordable for the people .The standard quality of feed will enhance the market potential of poultry, fish and diary product for the domestic as well as export markets .The owners of poultry industry , fisheries and fish hatcheries and dairy farms need to be brought within the purview of the public agencies that oversee this sector of the economy. In order to bring discipline to the poultry and diary industry and fisheries , this new ordinance will also ensure the quality of the processed poultry , fish and animal feed and their trading , which cannot be undertaken without license from the government .We welcome this ordinance to regulate a rapidly developing sector of our industry that is catering for both the domestic and export market .A comprehensive programme needs to be formulated and implemented by the banks and financial institutions , which would offer loans for the rehabilitation and expansion of the industries and enhance the quality and quantity of the output , within the terms and conditions of the ordinance now approved . The duly licensed poultry and diary industries and fisherman’s cooperatives and fish processing industries , should be given comprehensive credit on easy terms and also provide with the wherewithal to improve the production technology . The Bangladesh Bank and the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry and the public agencies should together implement the programme to achieve prodcution and export targets , prevention of diseases and efficient marketing of the food products.
