BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain Saturday said the High Court verdict did not say who is BNP secretary general and asserted that one cannot be a party leader with a court verdict or a certificate, reports UNB.

"We''ll run the party at the instruction of our chairperson, not with any judgment or a certificate," he told reporters at his NAM apartment after a meeting with a delegation of Barisal Bar Association that won the bar elections.

Delwar said the High Court judgment did not cast any impact on the party and people have rejected this verdict. In an oblique reference to Saifur-Hafiz group, he said, "Those who want to move forward by capitalising on an extraordinary situation they want to ruin BNP." Delwar said a dangerous situation is prevailing in the country.

"A conspiracy is on to destroy BNP," he said, asking the party leaders to frustrate the design. The BNP leader said if all, including the lawyers, raise their voice, party''s future programmes will be effectively implemented. He said BNP must announce a programme to free detained chairperson Khaleda Zia.

He said the nature of the programmes will be set in consultations with all in this situation. Delwar said the 4-party alliance still exists and if necessary other nationalist forces will be inducted into the alliance. BNP law affairs secretary Joynul Abedin and Barisal Bar president Adv Abdul Mannan Akand and general secretary Adv Shahid Hossain were present.

Meanwhile, Pro-reform BNP leader Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Saturday said the Election Commission has recognised him as the legitimate secretary general of the party although the High Court did not say.

Talking to reporters at his Banani house after a meeting with Dhaka city Juba Dal leaders, he said they would try to meet detained party chairperson Khaleda Zia after receiving the letter for dialogue from the Election Commission.

In reply to a question, Hafiz hoped Begum Zia would be freed through legal process and she will, if possible, take part in the dialogue with the government. "We want to take BNP forward under her leadership," he said, adding, "The party will have to be united in a pollution-free environment at the instruction of Begum Zia."

He said only nationalist forces like BNP can help overcome the current situation of the country. Posing a question to BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Hafiz wanted to know whether Khandaker Delwar wants to run BNP as per its constitution?

"He (Delwar) must also say whether it was a correct decision to appoint Professor Iajuddin Ahmed as the President and whether it was correct to extend the service age of the judges of the Supreme Court?"

Hafiz said if Begum Zia wants reforms in BNP, then what is the harm if they want to bring about reforms in the party? He said a democratic party like BNP must undergo through reforms to make it a dynamic party.

Hafiz said an elected committee of Juba Dal would be in place in the future in accordance with the Juba Dal constitution. He hoped that the detained Juba Dal leaders would be freed soon.
