US charge d''affaires Geeta Pasi Tuesday welcomed the planned government-political party dialogue, saying that party has a critical role to play in democracy and holding free, fair and participatory elections in Bangladesh, reports UNB. She made the remarks to reporters after a meeting with BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain at his NAM apartment. The meeting is part of her schedules to exchange views with major political parties ahead of the elections. Ms Pasi welcomed the Chief Advisor''s assurance of holding election no later than 2008 and call for dialogue with the political parties, meant for building a passage for exit from the interim period. She said it is very important step towards the government commitment to hold election as per roadmap. The US CDA said she underscored a message in each of meetings with the political parties that main thing is that the political parties have a critical role in democracy and also have very important function to ensure that the elections are free, fair and fully participatory. Delwar told the reporters that they discussed overall political and socioeconomic situation of the country. He said that "Bangladesh has an excellent relation with the United States" and they also exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. BNP standing-committee members Dr RA Gani, Khandaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, M Shamsul Islam and Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed, BNP chairperson''s advisor Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, senior vice-president TH Khan and acting office secretary Rizvi Ahmed were present. |
