China’s central government will grant additional 4.6 billion yuan to support agricultural production, processing and distribution, according to a recent national work conference on agriculture and grain production, reports Xinhua. Included are four billion yuan for counties with high-yield grain output and edible oil, and 600 million yuan for major meat producers. The government will pay for 35 percent of insurance premium in 16 pilot provinces and autonomous regions to encourage farmers to plant paddy and wheat this year; and 60 percent of insurance premium for the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) and reclamation areas directly under the central government. The supporting measures are expected to encouraged local governments to promote the production of provision, edible oil and meat, lower the costs for farmers to loan, and promote agricultural insurance industry to help avoid risks. China gears up to battle wheat, rape diseases BEIJING, April 8: China is enhancing its efforts to battle plant diseases spreading in the country’s wheat and rape plantations, reports Xinhua. As of April 1, 9.52 million mu (634,666.7 hectares) of the country’s wheat has developed stripe rust, a serious disease caused by a soil-borne fungus, according to Ministry of Agriculture statistics released yesterday. Meanwhile, 17.33 million mu of rape have been affected by a devastating disease called sclerotinia. The situation might get worse as the April-June period was a season prone for plant diseases and insect pests with warm weather and frequent rainfalls expected. |
