‘Awareness of violence against women needed’ PDF Print E-mail

Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury Tuesday stressed the need for increasing mass awareness of violence against women, reports agency.

“Violence against women increases during the natural calamity, including floods,” she said while addressing a seminar on ‘Violence against women during the flood and post-flood situations in Bangladesh’ at Jatiya Press Club in the city.

Chaired by Farah Kabir, country director of Action Aid, the seminar was addressed by Sreeani Pareira, head of Action Aid of the Asia region. Professor of Dhaka University Mahbuba Nasrin presented a keynote paper while Nayiman Imam, sector head of the organisation, moderated the seminar.

While listing various initiatives of the present administration for resisting violence against women, the adviser said the local government would be strengthened and the responsibility of the women representatives expanded.

The media can play an important role in resisting violence against women, she said urging all to highlight the success stories of women.
