Utilise talents for economic self-reliance ,President says at CUET convocation PDF Print E-mail

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed Tuesday underscored the need for developing our knowledge and skills at world standard to sustain in this age of globalization, reports agency.

“You know, Bangladesh is a country of immense prospect. It has huge human resources, fertile agriculture land and potential natural resources.

Now we need maximum utilization of existing resources in a planned way to make the overpopulated country a prosperous one,” he added.

The President said this while speaking at the first convocation of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) on its campus at Rangunia in the Chittagong district.

Commerce and Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman spoke as special guest and former chief adviser of the caretaker government Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman as the convocation speaker. Vice Chancellor of the university Dr Shyamal Kanti Biswas spoke on the occasion.

President Iajuddin said the development plan for the country has to be prepared keeping in mind that what sorts of development would take place or at which level the country would reach in the year 2050 or 2100. “All we know that the engineers are architect of the development.

The roadmap of development evolves from their talents, intellect souls and creative thinking. So, there must be clear reflection of farsightedness in their thinking, spirit and mind,” he added.

He also drew the engineers’ attention to attach importance on the issues of climate change and global warming in preparing their development plan. “We have to go forward keeping in mind the comprehensive plan in elevating the country into a mid-level one by getting out from “ vicious circle of poverty” within next one decade,” the President said.

“We are the citizens of a sovereign and independent Bangladesh today, we have to be self-reliant economically to keep our dignity up,” he added.

Terming universities as the best institution where all the ways towards flourishing talents are opened to build nation, he said the universities would not only provide the literal education to the students, but also would open the new doors so that the students could involve and enrich themselves in world standard education, research work and creative activities. “It is imperative to maintain friendly relations between teachers and students to create a congenial environment for education at the universities,” Prof Iajuddin said.

“The teachers have to be affectionate to their students and act like their guardians,” he added. He urged the students to uphold the dignity of the degree they obtained through their service, honesty, integrity and patriotism keeping in mind that there is a lot of contribution of the people to behind attaining their degrees. The President welcomed the initiatives of the university to open new departments including Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, and Mining Engineering keeping in mind the new era of technology.

Commerce and Education Adviser Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman said overpopulation and natural disasters are the big hurdles to the ways of the country’s economic development. “ So the young engineers have to play a vital role to over come the hurdles, they should also put their best efforts to turn the population as skilled and strong human resources like developed and other developing nations” he said.

Convocation Speaker Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman in his speech said there is no alternative to proper utilization of the talents and efficiency of the engineers to achieve self-reliant in all spheres of national life. “ But unfortunate is that we have failed to utilize properly the local engineers and technologists for the development of the country rather we gradually dependent on foreign advisers in this purposes” he pointed out.

He called upon the engineers and architects to acquire up-to-date technologies and their appropriate application to ensure sustainable development. Colorfully-decorated entire CUET campus over 161 acres of land with kaleidoscopic natural beauty on the occasion of its maiden convocation was vibrant with the presence of huge past and present students as well as the dignitaries from various disciplines.

President Iajuddin, who is also the chancellor of CUET, formally conferred graduation and post-graduation degrees on various disciplines to 1403 students and handed over gold medals to seven students for their outstanding academic results. Earlier, he led a convocation rally before the formal beginning of the most-coveted function of the university.
