Jacqui Smith, the British home secretary, arrives in Dhaka last night on a two-day visit, the British High Commission said in a statement.

Smith is the first UK home secretary to visit Bangladesh, and the third senior British minister to visit Bangladesh in four months.

British foreign secretary David Miliband came in February, while international development secretary Douglas Alexander visited the country in December 2007.

"The UK home secretary will discuss the ways of cooperation on countering terrorism and extremism, managing migration, the UK's support for police reform in Bangladesh, and support for the process of building a sustainable democracy," said the statement.

Smith is scheduled to call on chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, home affairs adviser MA Matin, foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and army chief General Moeen U Ahmed.

Her visit will conclude with a press conference at the British High Commissioner's home prior to her departure on April 10.
