Detained former premier and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina Monday aired doubts about holding parliamentary elections by December, as announced by the Election Commission, as she alleges foot dragging over the electoral roadmap, reports UNB. Pointing out what she said dillydallying in the ongoing Election Commission activities, she said, "I have reasons to doubt whether the parliamentary polls will take place on schedule." She made the observations while talking to her counsel during consultation after adjournment of the proceedings of the barge-mounted power plant deal case in the special court at the highly secured parliament-bhaban complex. Expressing grave concern over the spiraling prices of essentials, the former prime minister remarked that the government does not have the efficiency to manage the prevailing food crisis. "I have noticed the news photograph of women engaged in brawls that led to the pulling of each other''s hair for getting rice at a lower price," she said, adding that people are now in abject misery. "I would have no objection if the government could improve the prevailing situation keeping me behind bars," said Hasina, detained amid a purge in the interim period against former ruling politicians following the past turmoil over election issues. When asked about the extension of service of the Chief of Army Staff, General Moeen U Ahmed, Hasina said, "Go on. But where is the end?" The AL chief, through her counsel, called upon her party leaders and workers to remain united. |
