To achieve the MDGs is the promise and agreement of the countries s of the world, made in the year 2000. This is mainly to achieve eight goals by 2015 as eradication of poverty and hunger , achieving universal primary education , promoting gender equity and empowerment of women , reducing child mortality , improving maternal health combating HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, ensuing of environmental sustainability ,and developing a global partnership to achieve these goals. The government , civil society and political leadership and the media, have a role to play in achieving the targets set within the time schedule. A discussion meeting held on Monday between the concerned officials of the UNDP and the editors and senior representatives of the media dwelt on the need for the involvement of the media in to reach the targets of the MDGs to the grassroots level and communicate among the public agencies, the UN agencies , the people of each region to accelerate the comprehension and the achievement of the MDG targets .It has been observed in a survey carried out in June , 2005, by the UNDP, that less than three per cent of the people know about the MDGs . The expansion of the outreach of the MDGs and the focus on emerging development issues need the active participation of the print and electronic media at all levels. The media has to sensitize the people in each locality and prepare investigative reports based on issues , bets practices and progress achieved and recommend on how the media can help to achieve targets in each locality . A policy framework to undertake programmes for interaction and cooperation among public agencies and NGOs undertaking working towards the achievement of MDG targets and the media for reporting and recommending about speedy achievement of targets have to be formulated at the national level jointly by the government , the UNDP and the media leadership . We look forward to speedy action by the government , the UNDP and the media leadership to ensure achievement of the targets.
