President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed Saturday said the role of the Fire Service and Civil Defence is significant in ensuring security to people during incidents of fire and natural disasters and saving lives of civilians during war.

Their role is also vital for providing treatment to injured and transportation for serious patients, the President added.

These tasks would be much enhanced with participation of the people, he said in a message on the occasion of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Week-2008 beginning, an official handout said.

The President said the initiative for creating awareness among the people about the strategy of extinguishing fire and ensuring people’s participation through observing the week is appreciable.

He hoped that the fire service workers would stand by the people with much more responsibility and sincerity. In a separate message Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed asked the Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel to work with more honesty, sincerity and efficiency in the greater national interest.

On the eve of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2008, he said, “I hope all officials and employees of this department will carry out their responsibility with more honesty and sincerity.”
