Seven thousand and five hundred tonnes of rice given by the Indian government as aid for the people affected by flood and other natural disasters in Bangladesh will reach Chittagong port within a few days, reports agency. According to a press release issued by the Indian High Commission here, India has already supplied 12,000 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh out of 40,000 tonnes committed by New Delhi as assistance to the country for its relief and rehabilitation programme following flood and other natural disasters. During the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee here in December last year following the Sidr attack in the southern district, the Indian government had officially announced that it would export 500,000 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh. As per rule, the press release said, Bangladesh government earlier signed an agreement with West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corporation Ltd. (WBECSC) to import 100,000 tonnes of rice. Later, Bangladesh government signed agreements with four Indian companies to import400,000 tonnes of rice, it added. As part of the assistance for the disaster affected people here, India has provided Bangladesh with 1,000 tonnes of milk powder through the Indian milk producing company ‘Amul’, the press release said. |
