Kutubuddin Ahmed won the hot seat of Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) for next four years beating Golam Quddus Chowdhury Babu in the much-talked about election on Thursday, reports UNB.

Kutubuddin Ahmed, the immediate past acting secretary general and a former vice-president of BOA, polled 49 votes, while his lone rival Golam Quddus Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Volleyball Federation and former secretary general of BOA, got 24 votes.

After long seven years, the BOA election was held peacefully in a festive mood at the NSC conference room from 10:00am to 3:00 pm.

Soon after the BOA election results were announced in the afternoon, newly elected BOA secretary general Kutubuddin Ahmed in his immediate reaction to the press expressed his gratitude to the councilors for “taking the right decision.”

He said: “We’ll try our best to implement the pre-election pledge for the development of the country’s sports… our main target is to uphold the country’s pride and prestige through better result in the upcoming SA Games in Bangladesh next December.”

Asked about his rival, Kutubuddin said: “(Golam Quddus Chowdhury) Babu is a top ranking, experienced sports organiser. I would love to work with him for the development of the country sports.”

In the day’s election, 74 BOA councilors out of 76, exercised their voting rights to elect the secretary general and three executive members from Divisional quota.

Two councilors — former BOA vice-president Anjan Chowdhury Pintoo and representative of Bangladesh Police Mahbub Hakim — failed to cast their votes as they were abroad.

Ace shooter cum businessman Abdus Sattar Nini also failed to cast his vote, as his councilorship in the Olympian quota was cancelled by the BOA election commission at the last moment.

Kutubuddin Aksir of Dhaka Division (65 votes), Lily Aziz of Chittagong Division (50) and Asaduzzaman Khasru of Barisal Division (43) won the three EC member posts from Divisional quota. The other candidate, Mahmud Jamal of Rajshahi Division, conceded defeat securing 37 votes.
