Bangladesh Thursday signed an agreement with India on importing four lakh tonnes of rice through the public sector, food adviser AMM Shawkat Ali said, report agencie.

"The rice shipments will reach Bangladesh in 60 days from the day of opening the letter of credit," the adviser said.

One lakh tonnes of rice will arrive in Bangladesh in the first 30 days and the rest in the following 30 days by ship.

A tonne of rice will cost $430. Bangladesh had earlier signed an agreement with India to import one lakh tonnes of rice.

Of one lakh tonnes, 4,500 tonnes arrived in Bangladesh and the rest is expected to arrive by the end of April.

Indian external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on Dec 2 promised to facilitate exports of the five lakh tonnes of rice through public-sector undertakings.
